    A.  As has been previously stated, XML has been in the data / information pipeline for over
        twenty years now.  So, to pick and choose a "status for today" reference, you have to
        go to an expert.  Dave Obasanjo at Microsoft's XML Development Center has a recent article
        (October 12, 2004) entitled "The XML Litmus Test" with introductory and further reading
        links that we would like to recommend to you (his link for "XMPP" is already out of date -
        try this link).
